Time for a New Hobby

End of the world date setting has been a hobby of some for some time. These misguided, ill-intended people (including some ignorant Christians) spend so much time focused on the end of the world that they forget to participate in it. In turn, they turn calloused and apathetic, giving their entire attention over to date phantoms, ignoring the real world and real problems that we face in it.

To them I say: Don’t hide behind another date and use it as an excuse to do nothing in the real world. The world needs your selfless participation, not your selfish withdrawal from it.

Besides, I don’t buy that the world will ever “end”. I’m firmly convinced by the words of Jesus that it will be changed, first for the worst and then for good for good. Furthermore, He said that the Master will be pleased to find his servant busy when he returns, not hiding in an underground lair, cheering for an apocalypse.

Some lessons are hard learned.
Some criticisms are well deserved.
Some feedback is actually good.
Are we ready to listen when we should?

The Two Commandments

Jesus said, “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

(Remember that, especially anyone calling themselves “Christian”.)

Increase your appreciation for the down-to-Earth-ness of the Old and New Testaments by studying Far Eastern esoteric, religious texts like the Dao De Jing! Some sentences from it sound so philosophically yummy. But when you try to analyze their actual meaning, you’ll find that all its sugary goodness is void of any meaningful nutrition. But it sure sounds “smart”! As always, the figuratively obese people of the West rush off to buy it to satisfy their sweet tooth. As with Buddhism, they usually only eat what they want and throw the rest away.

Some Standard Definitions From the Doublespeak Dictionary

Let’s play a game! It’s called, “Find the Bigotry and Intolerance”. Ready? Go!

We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that. We operate as a family business … our restaurants are typically led by families – some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that. We intend to stay the course. We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

And:

I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about.”

Hmmm. I couldn’t find either, unless, of course, we designate anyone who disagrees with the LGBT movement a “bigot” and anything they say “intolerant”.

This artist commends Dan Cathy for his support of traditional marriage and family and for not being ashamed to make wonderful, positive statements in their defense. Little did he know that his comments would test the limits of free speech in New Amerika! But the subsequent reaction also made it obvious who the term “intolerant bigot” may be more apt to describe, don’t you think?

The "Heaven Bound" Hypocrite's Highway Hello

Aside from Jesus, there are no genuine heroes in the Bible. Each man and woman has their character flaw and it’s there in black and white for generations to take note of. Jacob was a cheat and deceived his own dad. Moses killed an Egyptian. Saul (the king) was eaten up with jealousy. David couldn’t discipline his children or curb his lust. Solomon was a little too ready to marry just about any woman. You can read all about it. That the Bible would record these things for posterity, I think, points to its inspiration. People typically try to make themselves saints on paper.

Nowadays, hypocrisy affects a lot of us. And that’s probably one reason why Jesus spoke a lot about it. In fact, it could be said that, generally speaking, the bulk of biblical narratives are accurate, faithful records about hypocritical behavior of hypocrites. But I say what better way to show us the reality of mankind than to focus it on that embarrassingly true element of each and every one of us — myself included!

But the point is not to try to downplay hypocrisy and make society accept it. Neither should we be easy on ourselves. No. We should pray for grace and strength to get rid of those bad habits, whatever they might be, so that they won’t distract from the Message. After all, if we’re going to point to Jesus, the Son of God, then let’s use our index finger, not our middle one.
